“The Lisbon school: architecture and culture from 1970 to 1986”

Leonor Matos Silva DOCTORAL THESIS

The thesis “The Lisbon school: architecture and culture from 1970 to 1986” is about the architecture course at the Fine Arts School of Lisbon. It covers the period from the beginning of the school’s academic crises in the early 70s, through the 1974 political revolution that led to the suppression of classes, to joining the European Economic Community, in 1986, when private courses began to appear.
The text privileges a cultural perspective, favouring the events described in the vast archival documents that reflect what was put into practice rather than official, but scarce, information. The result is a portrait of a period which had been erased from the collective memory.
