(Re-)inhabiting the city left behind. Appropriation and resignification of the modern project in Mozambique

Patrícia Noormahomed DOCTORAL THESIS

This doctoral research introduces a new approach to understanding and interpreting Mozambique’s architectural modernity as cultural heritage. Starting from the consideration that heritage is a social construction, it approaches this legacy not as a static image of the past but as an accumulation of appropriations and meanings over time. The focus is on urban housing, conceived during the final phase of Portuguese colonial occupation and reinhabited and redesigned once postcolonial life took over. Articulating the dialogue with a decolonial review of the “Authorized Heritage Discourse”, the research moves towards the (re)definition of this legacy as a hybrid and ever-changing heritage whose values and meanings are linked to the cultural practices of its inhabitants in their daily lives.
